Serj Tankian – reimagined
This I painted many moons ago using pen and ink (my preferred medium) during my time at Exeter College, where I was doing an art foundation course. It’s the lead singer of nu-metal band System of a Down, Serj Tankian, and took approximately six hours to complete. I used to love the band – and I’m still happy to listen to them, particularly the Mezmerize album – and I always thought Serj had an interesting face, bearing a striking resemblance to Frank Zappa (another of my favourites).
His hair is definitely the point of interest about him and it reminded me of nature, all wild and free, so I turned the ends of it into tree roots and gave him a few flowers around the crown, an homage to Arthur Rackham who does beautiful, creepy things with flora and fauna.
